Our Services

Our team provides personalized interdisciplinary health services for individuals, couples, families and groups. It is not uncommon for people to have concerns in more than one area, as well. We will conduct a thorough evaluation with you, so that together we can develop a specific and realistic plan to help you accomplish your goals.

And, if Coastal Health ends up not being a good fit for you, we will work with you to refer you to a provider in the community who does offer what you need.

Our services fees range and are subject to the service provided.

Psychotherapy

  • Psychotherapy is not easily described in general statements. The therapeutic relationship is unique in that it is a highly personal and at the same time, a contractual agreement. It varies depending on the personalities of the therapist and consumer, and the difficulties you bring forward. There are many different methods that may be used to deal with the concerns that you hope to address. Psychotherapy is not like a medical doctor visit. Instead, it calls for a very active effort on your part. For the therapy to be most successful, you will have to work on the things we discuss both during our sessions and at home. Making changes in your beliefs or behaviours can be scary, and sometimes disruptive to the relationships you are in currently. Alternately, psychotherapy has also been shown to have benefits for people who go through it. Therapy often leads to better relationships, solutions to specific problems, and significant reductions in feelings of distress. But there are no guarantees of what you will experience, as everyone takes something different from this process.

  • Prices vary with each provider. The cost per 50 minute session ranges from $125 to $210.

Counselling

  • What is Counselling? While also not quick to describe, counselling typically works in the area of supportive services. In particular, we would apply the term counselling to issues like life milestones and decisions, career transitioning and educational issues. Counselling may lead to improved relationships and solutions to specific problems. While counselling tends to be brief in nature, everyone takes something different from this process.

  • Prices vary with provider. A 50 minute session will cost between $125 to $210.

Art Therapy

  • Art Therapy is the use of art materials as a means of creative self expression, with the intention of understanding one’s self and to be understood by another. The art therapist forms a relationship with clients as they make art and explore the meaning of the art piece. This process enables clients to express and to reflect on thoughts and feelings. It empowers clients that feel ambivalence or feel difficulty speaking about life experiences. Engagement with art materials enables clients to symbolically address life experiences that can be difficult to articulate.

The art therapist has knowledge of many directives that can support the client’s needs. However, clients are always encouraged to work spontaneously. Creating artwork spontaneously extends the possibilities to address current concerns and feelings. The different art materials used in the sessions can include: drawing, watercolour paint, acrylic paint, clay, plaster, photography and collage.

  • An Individual Art therapy session fee is $100 +HST per 50 minute session. Group and corporate rates vary depending on size and scope.

Play Therapy

  • Play therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses play to explore the lives and feelings of children ages 3 to 12. The therapist will observe the child’s choices, decisions, and play style with the goal of helping children learn to express themselves and problem solve in healthy ways.

Play therapy can be helpful when children are have undergone or are undergoing or witnessing stressful events in their lives, such as a serious illness or hospitalization, domestic violence, abuse, trauma, a family crisis, or an upsetting change in their environment.

The therapist will conduct an interview with the parent(s) or caregiver(s) as well as meet the child separately to assess the unique needs of the child. During play therapy sessions, the child is encouraged to play with very specific types of toys that encourage self-expression and the learning of positive behaviors.

  • Prices vary with each provider. The cost per 50 minute session ranges from $125 to $210.

ADHD Assessments

  • The Assessment team is comprised of psychologist (Lead), psychometrists, and doctor of clinical psychology students who are involved in rigorous, training, and supervision when completing the assessments. You can expect to spend 1-1.5 hours, with your provider for each appointment.

This robust clinical training program that supports doctoral students and clinical counsellors’ growth in various areas. ADHD assessments are a key component of our training program. A supervisor and/or a supervisor and a trainee may remotely observe the clinician during the assessment appointments. You can meet them at the appointment if you wish. After each session your provider and any trainees also meet with their supervisor to review and ask any questions about the therapist’s process. The process is similar to seeing a resident at a medical clinic. If you do not want a student or trainee observing your appointment you will be given the opportunity to consent on your intake form. You always have the ability to change your consent at any time when seeking therapeutic or psychological services.

  • Please note that the assessment fees reflect time spent on scoring, referring with other providers (as needed) and to provide you with your written report at the final feedback session. Unless additional assessments or appointments are needed, the cost of an ADHD assessment is $1250. Payment is broken into 3 payments: $250 is due at Appointment 1 $500 is due at Appointment 2, and $500 is due at when you receive your report (Appointment 3). Your provider will let you know ASAP if there are additional fees or appointments related to the ADHD Assessment. See ADHD Assessment Overview Flow Chart above.

Occupational Therapy

  • Occupational therapy (OT) helps to promote function and independence in the activities (occupations) necessary to live and enjoy life. These activities may be related to self-care (dressing, eating, getting around), being productive (working, going to school, volunteering), or leisure (music, sports, gardening). Occupational therapists work with children and adults of all ages and with a wide range of conditions relating to mental and physical health as well as development and learning.

When injury, illness, disability, or other problems limit a person’s ability to engage in the activities that are important to them, occupational therapists help to solve problems, facilitate recovery, and minimize barriers. Occupational therapists take a “whole-person approach” to care. They are uniquely trained in not only the medical and physical factors contributing to disability or injury but also the psycho-social factors. The OT approach is based on research proving that a person’s ability to engage in practical and purposeful activities increases overall health and well-being.

  • The cost of an OT visit varies depending on the scope of the appointment.

Speech-Language Therapy

  • A speech-language pathologist (S-LP) helps others with their functional communication and swallowing needs. Sometimes injury, illness, disability, or other personal experiences can result in speech, language, and/or swallowing difficulties that affect quality of life. An S-LP can help with this by administering comprehensive, evidence-based assessment and treatment services. Through collaboration and client-centered care, an S-LP can identify personal goals that are both relevant and functional. This can help minimize barriers, improve quality of life, and maximize communication and/or swallowing effectiveness based on an individual’s strengths and needs. There are many different areas an S-LP can help someone with. These might include (but are not limited to) stuttering/disfluency; transgender/gender affirming voice services; voice and/or resonance disorders; swallowing difficulties/dysphagia; communication difficulties related to neurogenic diseases, disorders, or accidents (e.g., stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, traumatic brain injury); supportive communication strategies for families.

Systems Navigation, Support & Education

The effect of a mental illness cause a worker to take a lot of time off, or appear less productive which can add strain in supervisor and co-worker relationships.

“Mental illnesses cost Canadian employers billions of dollars in absenteeism or sick days, “presenteeism” (coming to work, even when the employee can’t work well), disability and other benefits, and lost productivity. “
